LOS ANGELES (AP) — Paris Hilton is making good on her promise to become a better person.
The 27-year-old socialite made an "extremely generous" donation toward the construction of a medical building at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles, hospital officials said Thursday, although they did not specify the amount.
"The children I have met through my involvement with Childrens Hospital have truly touched my heart," Hilton said in a statement. "I am proud to make a donation and lend my name to the fundraising effort to help children who are facing terribly serious illnesses."
The 460,000-square-foot Childrens Center for Cancer and Blood Diseases is expected to open in 2010.
After spending about 23 days in jail last year for violating probation on alcohol-related reckless driving charges, Hilton told CNN's Larry King the experience caused her to re-evaluate the role partying played in her life. She said she wanted "to help raise money for kids and for breast cancer and multiple sclerosis."

NEW YORK (AP) — Do they really want to hurt him? That's the question Boy George's managers are asking U.S. authorities now that the 47-year-old singer has been denied a visa to enter the country.
The Culture Club frontman, whose real name is George O'Dowd, had planned a U.S. tour this summer, including a free concert at the New York City Department of Sanitation's Family Day in August. He worked for the department in 2006 while performing court-ordered community service in a drug case.
His managers said in a statement Monday that O'Dowd has been denied a visa because he's awaiting trial in London.
The singer, whose hits include "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me" and "Karma Chameleon," has pleaded not guilty to imprisoning a man at his London home.
The U.S. Department of State said visa records are confidential so it couldn't comment.

ABOARD THE BRP PAMPANGA, Philippines (AFP) - Philippine rescue teams battled furious seas and high winds Monday in a desperate hunt for more survivors of a ferry that sank in a typhoon with 862 people aboard.
Only the tip of the bow of the Princess of the Stars remained above water after it tilted and quickly capsized Saturday, and navy divers have found no sign of life aboard the doomed vessel just off the central island of Sibuyan.
A US supply ship with search and rescue helicopters aboard and maritime surveillance aircraft were ordered into the area to help, the US embassy here said.
So far, 36 people from the ferry have turned up alive, raising hopes that more will be found on the many tiny islands nearby.
Late Monday at least 40 people were reported to have turned up alive on the island of Burias but it is unclear how many were on the doomed ferry.
"Not all of them came from the sunken ferry," mayor Eduardo Andueza told DZBB radio from Claveria town.
"Some were survivors of fishing vessels that also sank during the typhoon," Andueza said.
"There are survivors, there are some who made it ashore but later died, and some of the bodies were already decomposing, so I had them buried," the mayor said.
Several bodies have washed up along shorelines along with children's shoes, heightening fears of a high death toll, but coast guard chief Vice Admiral Wilfredo Tamayo said: "We have not lost hope that there might be more survivors."
"We have slowed down to scout for floating bodies," coast guard rescue vessel captain Lieutenant Commander Inocencio Rosario told reporters on board.
"After three days they tend to float," he added.
The search continued as the ferry company revised up the number of passengers and crew on board from 747 to 862.
Anxious relatives waited at the ferry firm's Manila offices waiting for news -- and answers.
It was the company's fourth disaster at sea in the past two decades but despite a government order banning Sulpicio Lines from operating its 22 vessels, the company continued to sell tickets Monday.
The company has been officially blamed for the weekend tragedy while it has maintained that the ferry was "seaworthy."
"Definitely, Sulpicio Lines is responsible here," said Transport Undersecretary Elena Bautista.
The government also set up a task force to look into the cause of the accident, while anti-corruption campaigners threatened a class action against the company, saying it should lose its operating licence.
The Princess of the Stars had been allowed to sail despite Typhoon Fengshen bearing down because, under current Philippine law, the vessel was deemed large enough to stay afloat in the periphery of the storm.
But Fengshen tragically made a sudden change of direction from north to west, and headed directly into the ferry's path. The powerful storm has also killed almost 230 people on land.
The captain tried to get the vessel to safe harbour, but it ran aground. There were conflicting reports that he had slowed the engines in the face of the storm and that the motors had given out.
The 24,000-tonne ship issued a distress signal on Saturday from near Sibuyan, about 150 kilometres (93 miles) south of Manila. One survivor said there was almost no time to react.
"It seemed like everything happened in 15 minutes," Reynato Lanorio, one of the crew, told DZBB radio. "Next thing we knew, the ship had gone under."
More than 80 divers reached the vessel Monday with cutting equipment hoping that people may have found air pockets in the hull.
Countless people in this impoverished nation rely on relatively inexpensive ferries to get around the country's 7,100 islands, and Sulpicio Lines is one of the biggest of the ferry companies.
It has had at least three other major accidents since 1987, when its Dona Paz ferry collided with an oil tanker. Around 4,000 people were killed, the worst peacetime maritime disaster in history.
President Gloria Arroyo has ordered regulators to change the rules that allowed the Princess of the Stars to set sail with the typhoon nearby, her spokesman Jesus Dureza said.

Within moments of arriving at Los Angeles International Airport on Friday evening, Spears' entourage was involved in a scuffle with a paparazzo.
Between 30 and 35 photographers swarmed her vehicle outside the terminal before a bodyguard pushed a camera into a photographer's face, airport police Sgt. Jim Holcomb said.
Holcomb said the paparazzo complained that the shove left a slight mark on the cheek, but cooler heads prevailed and no charges were filed.
The 26-year-old pop star was unscathed, and Holcomb says officers ensured she was able to leave the airport safely.

The lawsuit against Capitol Records and EMI Music Marketing claims the companies breached contracts with the band by improperly categorizing certain record sales and miscalculating everything from producer royalties to foreign taxes.
A representative for Capitol and EMI did not immediately return a phone message seeking comment Thursday.
The group claims it tried to audit the band's records kept by Capitol, but the firm didn't fully cooperate. The band stated in its lawsuit that it cannot determine how much money it is owed and asked a judge to order Capitol Records to allow a full accounting review of the band's records.
The glam-rock band's popularity peaked in the late 1980s and early 1990s, recording hits such as "Every Rose Has Its Thorn" and "Talk Dirty to Me." Courtesy of embarq.com

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — Jamie Lynn Spears gave birth to a baby girl Thursday morning at a south Mississippi hospital.
A person close to the Spears family confirmed the baby's birth to The Associated Press. The person asked not to be identified because the family had not yet announced the baby's birth.
The 17-year-old was the star of Nickelodeon's "Zoey 101" and is the younger sister of pop star Britney Spears. The Spears family announced in December that Jamie Lynn was pregnant. The father is Casey Aldridge, a pipe-layer from Liberty, Miss. The couple is not married.

OAKVILLE, Iowa (AP) — As floodwaters take aim at the tiny towns lining the Mississippi River, the heartland ethic of neighbors helping neighbors is proving to be a potent force against the rising water.
Volunteers up and down the river in Illinois and Missouri joined sandbagging operations in the frantic effort to contain the Mississippi as forecasters predicted near-record crests from Quincy, Ill., to Winfield, Mo. Storms and flooding across six states this month have killed 24 people, injured 148 and caused more than $1.5 billion in estimated damage in Iowa alone — a figure that's likely to increase as river levels climb in Missouri and Illinois. As the rivers rise, these modest towns survive because neighbors look after each other, and the people reinforcing the levees are business owners, farmers and fellow church members who have lived there for years. Federal officials predicted as many as 30 more levees could overflow this week, leaving industrial and agricultural areas vulnerable but sparing major residential centers. So far this week, 20 levees have overflowed.
At least 10 have been topped in Illinois and Missouri in recent days, including two south of tiny Gulfport, Ill., that threatened to swamp 30,000 acres of farmland near the evacuated town of Meyer, Ill.
A 280-mile stretch of the Mississippi River between Fulton, Ill., and Winfield, Mo., is expected to remain closed for at least 10 more days because of flooding. As many as 10 tows — each with as many as 15 barges — were believed stuck on the upper Mississippi River.
Residents in and around Winfield were urged to evacuate their homes after another levee breach Wednesday night.

J.Lo performs at elementary school graduation 2008-06-18 09:50:55
NEW YORK (AP) — Students at a Staten Island, New York, elementary school for autistic children sure like the way Jennifer Lopez moves.
Teacher Kathy Amati and a paraprofessional showed the video for Lopez's "Let's Get Loud" to the students at P.S. 37. The children liked it so much, they wanted to watch it every day.
They learned the lyrics and the dance moves from the video.
With their teacher's encouragement, they wrote to Lopez, hoping for pictures or an autograph. Instead, she asked to come to their graduation.
On Tuesday, the singer-actress performed "Let's Get Loud" for a group of eight 10- and 11-year-olds at their graduation ceremony.

I took this picture of the Kawasan Falls located in South Badian, Cebu (Philippines). I was amaze because no matter which angle you take the shots, it's like a postcard photo. The waterfalls itself is such a crystal clear perfect place to relax and cool off from the humidity of the climate back home. You can swim, dive and even rent the bamboo floaters that fits at least 20 little Filipino's to adventure the cave underneath the falls then pass the falling water. Also, a perfect natural therapy and massage for your muscle aches and pain. It has a long hike to see the beginning of the falls and as far as I remember it has an approximately seven waterfalls, a river falls steeply down from the hills above flowing through Matutinao River. On your way to see the first and the biggest falls (shown below) it's like an adventure hiking through a jungle, the scenery itself and hearing the sound of the different animals and surrounded with big trees it's unbelievable. The interesting part is while hiking you will encounter the manmaid local bridges overlooking the river, a very rocky and narrow path. I feel like a I'm walking in a beam making sure to keep my balance in place just like a gymnast! (LOL) but, believe me the scenery of the place will keep your balance in tight because you will get distracted by the nature of it and you will be amaze of the beautiful river streaming down creating tiny waterfalls and of course the sound of the water. Everytime I visit my home in Cebu, Kawasan Falls is the number one in my list to see and venture. My family and friends enjoyed a lot! and whenever I'm home they look forward to see it again.
