Consumers' Demands For Good Deals Seriously

If you're looking for an extra bargain before the holidays, you may only have to ask. With holiday sales shaping up to be the lowest in years, possibly the worst since the industry began annual comparisons in 1969, retailers say they're taking consumers' demands for good deals seriously. Some are extending return policies, while others are matching competitors' prices. Many are volunteering on the spot discounts and even letting customers haggle prices well down from what's marked in a desperate bid to make the cash register ring. More and more consumers are doing just that, treating a trip to the mall like a visit to the used car lot. Shoppers are also being far more savvy about asking retailers to match a competitor's lower price. With sales slow at virtually all retailers, experts say customers now have the upper hand. And even some who don't explicitly ask for a discount or price-match are pressing for better deals. For some retailers, desperation is setting in. The new year brings new inventory, so retailers typically try to clear out the old stock by year's end. Stores are increasingly willing to do whatever they can to get rid of merchandise even offering discounts on the spot. Other retailers are giving consumers more wiggle room for returns instead of haggling over prices.

Jermaine Dupri Cleared Up Some Misconceptions

Jermaine Dupri wants to clear up some misconceptions. In an entry on his blog, the music producer says he and girlfriend Janet Jackson haven't split up and she isn't pregnant! Jermaine writes, "As you all know Janet is a very private person. The only reason you see her as much as you do on my YouTube vlog is because of me! LOL! But I hear yall and your questions! No she is not pregnant and yes we're still together." Janet and Jermaine have been dating for about four years. Janet canceled a string of concerts on her Rock Witchu tour this fall because of a bout of migraine associated vertigo, which is characterized by dizziness, imbalance and other symptoms.

Pre-Winter Storm Brought Snowfall In Las Vegas The Desert City

Let it Snow! Let it Snow! Let it Snow! Our little puppy "Nikko" loved it!

Taken from the front of our house in Las Vegas! The feeling of being in a snowfall!
A rare pre-winter storm brought Las Vegas its heaviest snowfall in nearly three decades, closing the airport and freeways as several inches coated marquees on the Las Vegas Strip and weighed down palm trees. The storm Wednesday and early Thursday also dumped snow on rain on much of southern California and parts of Nevada outside Las Vegas. The weather service recorded 7.5 inches of snow at McCarran on Jan. 30-31, 1979. The snow Wednesday prompted the cancellation of all flights in and out of Vegas. Visitors parked and posed for pictures wearing hooded jackets. Other parts of Nevada were forecast to receive as much as 8 inches of snow in the second winter storm this week to drop snow on the desert city. Snowfall is common in nearby mountains hills, but not on the Strip or surrounding neighborhoods.

Wallace & Gromit Christmas Special Leaked On YouTube

It's a whodunit for the info age. The animators behind Wallace & Gromit say they have quashed a pirated recording of a Christmas special leaked on YouTube. But Aardman Animations, based in Bristol, England, said Thursday it had "no idea" how the material slipped out. Three clips from "A Matter of Loaf and Death," were uploaded to the video-sharing site on Sunday. The special is scheduled to air on BBC television on Christmas Day. The hugely popular clay animated series stars the cheese-loving, hair-brained inventor Wallace and his long-suffering pooch, Gromit. A few audiences have seen preview screenings. The YouTube version featured poor sound and may have been recorded using a video camera or mobile phone.

2 Shoes Thrown At President Bush During Press Conference In Iraq

President George W. Bush wrapped up a whirlwind trip to two war zones Monday that in many ways was a victory lap without a clear victory. A signature event occurred when an Iraqi reporter hurled two shoes at Bush, an incident the president later described as "a bizarre moment." Bush visited the Iraqi capital just 37 days before he hands the war off to his successor, Barack Obama, who has pledged to end it. The president wanted to highlight a drop in violence and to celebrate a recent U.S.-Iraq security agreement, which calls for U.S. troops to withdraw from Iraq by the end of 2011. "The war is not over," Bush said, but "it is decisively on its way to being won." Bush then traveled to Afghanistan where he spoke to U.S. soldiers and Marines at a hangar on the tarmac at Bagram Air Base. The rally for over a thousand military personnel took place in the dark, cold pre-dawn hours. Bush was greeted by loud cheers from the troops. "Afghanistan is a dramatically different country than it was eight years ago," he said. "We are making hopeful gains." But the president's message on progress in the region was having trouble competing with the videotaped image of the angry Iraqi who hurled his shoes at Bush in a near miss, shouting in Arabic, "This is your farewell kiss, you dog!" The reporter was later identified as Muntadar al-Zeidi, a correspondent for Al-Baghdadia television, an Iraqi owned station based in Cairo, Egypt. In Iraqi culture, throwing shoes at someone is a sign of contempt. Iraqis whacked a statue of Saddam with their shoes after U.S. Marines toppled it to the ground following the 2003 invasion. "I'm not insulted. I don't hold it against the government," Bush said later in an interview with ABC News. "The guy wanted to get on TV and he did. I don't know what his beef is, but whatever it is, I'm sure someone will hear it." Reaction in Iraq was swift but mixed, with some condemning the act and others applauding it. Television news stations throughout Iraq repeatedly showed footage of the incident, and newspapers carried headline stories. In Baghdad's Shiite slum of Sadr City, supporters of radical Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr called for protests against President Bush and demanded the release of the reporter, who was jailed after throwing his shoes. Thousands took to the streets Monday, chanting, "Bush, Bush, listen well, Two shoes on your head." Talking to a small group of reporters after the incident, Bush said, "I didn't know what the guy said, but I saw his sole." He told the reporters that "you were more concerned than I was. I was watching your faces." "I'm pretty good at ducking, as most of you know," Bush joked, adding quickly that "I'm talking about ducking your questions." On a more serious note, he said, "I mean, it was just a bizarre moment, but I've had other bizarre moments in the presidency. I remember when Hu Jintao was here. Remember? We had the big event? He's speaking, and all of a sudden I hear this noise had no earthly idea what was taking place, but it was the Falun Gong woman screaming at the top of her lungs (near the ceremony on the White House lawn). It was kind of an odd moment." The Iraqi government condemned the act and demanded an on-air apology from Al-Baghdadia television, the Iraqi-owned station that employs Muntadar al-Zeidi. The reporter was taken into custody and reportedly was being held for questioning by Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki's guards and is being tested for alcohol and drugs.

Other Arab journalists and commentators, fed up with U.S. policy in the Middle East and Bush's decision to invade Iraq in 2003 to topple Saddam, echoed al-Zeidi's sentiments Monday. Abdel-Bari Atwan, editor of the influential London-based newspaper Al-Quds Al-Arabi, wrote on the newspaper's Web site that the incident was "a proper goodbye for a war criminal." After word spread of the shoe attack, Afghan reporters had gathered at the presidential palace in Afghanistan's capital, Kabul, before a news conference by Bush and Afghan President Hamid Karzai. Some of the reporters a collegial bunch that sees one another several times a week egged on one of their colleagues, jokingly trying to pressure the television reporter into taking off his shoe and hurling it once the U.S. president arrived. He did not. Karzai's deputy spokesman, Saimak Herwai, told Afghan reporters that they had to address Bush as "His Excellency," an honorary title not typically used with U.S. presidents. The request was followed by some, not by others. Bush then took a helicopter ride to Kabul to meet with Karzai. After their meeting, Bush said he told Karzai,"You can count on the United States. Just like you've been able to count on this administration, you'll be able to count on the next administration as well." The mixed reactions to Bush in both countries emphasized the uncertain situations Bush is leaving behind in the region.

In Iraq, nearly 150,000 U.S. troops remain in Iraq, protecting the fragile democracy. More than 4,209 members of the U.S. military have died and $576 billion has been spent since the war began five years and nine months ago. The Bush administration and even White House critics credit last year's military buildup with the security gains in Iraq. Last month, attacks fell to the lowest monthly level since the war began in 2003. In Afghanistan, there are about 31,000 U.S. troops and commanders have called for up to 20,000 more. The fight is especially difficult in southern Afghanistan, a stronghold of the Taliban where violence has risen sharply this year.

Hugh Jackman Will Be Hosting The 81st Academy Awards

He sings, dances, acts on stage and screen, and he's the "Sexiest Man Alive." Hugh Jackman does everything but standup comedy and that's why the first time Oscars host fulfills the academy's promise to shake up the show in a way that's as tough to predict as the winners. Hugh was announced Friday as the host of the 81st Academy Awards, a marked departure from the academy's standard of big name comedians. Jon Stewart, who hosted in 2008 and 2006, and Ellen DeGeneres, the 2007 host, were the latest in a line of funny emcees since 1990. Billy Crystal did it eight times, Whoopi Goldberg took on four, Steve Martin did it twice and David Letterman and Chris Rock each had a shot. As the parade of A-list comedians continued, ratings were in steady decline. But with new producers, a new director, new set designer and even a new music director, the academy has been hinting for months at an all-new look and feel for this year's Oscars telecast on Feb. 22. Having Hugh Jackman host certainly fits with that theme. Producers Laurence Mark and Bill Condon called the Australian actor "a consummate entertainer and an internationally renowned movie star."

Tara Reid Went To The Promises Treatment Center

A publicist says Tara Reid has checked herself into rehab. Jack Ketsoyan said Friday that the "American Pie" star went to the Promises Treatment Center. He did not specify what she was being treated for or when she entered the facility. Tara Reid, 33, earned a reputation as a drunken partier after famously being photographed on a red carpet with her breast exposed, apparently unaware that the strap of her dress had fallen off.

Madonna Has Won A Round Against The British Press

Madonna won a judgment Monday against a British tabloid that she accused of breaching her privacy and copyright by publishing pictures of her 2000 wedding. Madonna, who says the pictures were stolen by an interior decorator from her home in Beverly Hills, California, is seeking damages in excess of 5 million pounds ($7.5 million) from the publishers of the Mail on Sunday newspaper. Judge David Eady entered a judgment in her favor but deferred a decision on compensation until the new year. Madonna and film director Guy Ritchie, who recently gained a preliminary divorce decree, were married at a Scottish castle on Dec. 22, 2000. No pictures of the event had been published until they appeared Oct. 19 in the Mail on Sunday, said Matthew Nicklin, a lawyer representing Madonna. The newspaper published 11 photographs over the front page and a double-page inside spread. Nicklin said the newspaper paid 5,000 pounds ($7,500) for the pictures. Associated Newspapers, publisher of the Mail on Sunday, had no immediate comment on the court's decision. The only photographs of the wedding were taken by photographer Jean-Baptiste Mondino and presented to Madonna as a gift. He said Madonna put the photographs in an album that she kept in her home. An interior designer, Robert Joseph Wilber, "surreptitiously gained access to the photograph album and copied at least 26 photographs." Despite admissions made by the newspaper, Madonna has not received an apology, Nicklin added. Madonna and Ritchie were granted a preliminary decree of divorce on Nov. 21. The split is expected to become final early next month.

Yellow Light Signal For The Shoppers On Black Friday

Consumer electronics have long been among the most popular holiday gifts, with fierce competition among shoppers for day after Thanksgiving deals on flat screen TVs and laptop computers. This year, everyone expects the economic crisis to dampen the appetite for gadgets. But how much? Compared to buying a car or a house, electronics are cheap, and those who scrimp on big purchases may still treat themselves or their children to an iPod. Circuit City filed for bankruptcy protection earlier in the month, which may have steered some prospective buyers to rivals.

At Best Buy, one of the "doorbuster" deals for early birds was for a 50 inch flat panel TV from Panasonic Corp. for $900. The manufacturer slashed its annual profit forecast by 90 percent on Friday, blaming a strong yen, sluggish sales and heavy discounting. Best Buy was also selling a 32 inch flat panel TV, the most popular size, for $400. Analysts at NPD Group noted that looking over a few decades, the average price for a TV in the U.S. has been just over $300, and flat panels could reach that level this holiday season, finally cementing them as the mainstream replacement for the cathode-ray tube. Manufacturers have increased their production capacity for flat panels this year, just as consumer spending is tanking, which should lead to further price cuts as the season goes on. TV manufacturers have one reason to be hopeful, sales of new TVs may be bolstered by the impending shutdown of the analog broadcasting network in February, which means that older TVs that use regular antennas will need to be replaced or use a box that converts the signal.

More generally, the decline in gas prices may be raising consumers' willingness to spend up from the absolute bottom!

Vatican Media Praised The Beatles' Musical Legacy

Vatican media are praising the Beatles' musical legacy and sounding philosophical about John Lennon's boast that the British band was more popular than Jesus. Vatican newspaper L'Osservatore Romano recalls that Lennon's comment outraged many when he made it in 1966. But it says in its Saturday edition that the remark can be written off now as the bragging of a young man wrestling with unexpected success. The newspaper as well as Vatican Radio last week noted the 40th anniversary of the Beatles' "White Album." It said the album demonstrated how creative the Beatles were, compared with what it called the "standardized, stereotypical" songs being produced today.

A perfume company is claiming Prince and his music publisher failed to honor a contract to help market a fragrance named for the album "3121." The breach of contract lawsuit was filed Monday by Revelations Perfume and Cosmetics Inc. in New York. The company says it licensed Prince's name, likeness and the album title "3121" to market its fragrance. No More Frown Lines Between The Brows

Lately Botox has been used in conjunction with fillers (Restylane, Captique, etc) in order to enhance their effectiveness and prolong the duration thereof. Botox has also been used in conjunction with Laser resurfacing for the same reasons. The best candidates are patients between the ages of 18 and 65 years old. It is the only treatment of its type approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). It works by blocking nerve impulses, which reduces the movement of those particular muscles. With less movement, the skin surface gradually smoothes out and the frown lines begin to fade. Botox Chicago have treated numerous patients with Botox Cosmetic as well as with Botox for Hyperhidrosis.

Say goodbye to fine lines and wrinkles without risky cosmetic surgery!

The Season Of Beyonce Has Begun

With a new album and two movies on the horizon, it appears the Season of Beyonce has begun. Then again, one could argue that it's always Beyonce season. Two years ago, it was all about the release of her second CD, "B'Day" and her starring role in the movie "Dreamgirls." Last year, her "Irreplaceable" was up for a top Grammy and she was on a world tour. And this year, besides a high-profile Grammy performance with Tina Turner, her hush-hush marriage to Jay-Z and appearances on hit remixes with Justin Timberlake and Usher generated headlines.

Though it may have been hard to tell, she actually did take a yearlong hiatus from recording music!

Lindsay Lohan has been pelted with a flour bomb on arrival at a Paris nightclub wearing a fur stole. Animal rights activists showered Lindsay with flour when she went to the VIP Room Theater in the early hours of Saturday with her friend, disc jockey Samantha Ronson. Rihanna Has Canceled A Concert

Rihanna has canceled a concert scheduled Friday in Indonesia over security concerns. Dive Purnomo, a spokeswoman for the event organizer, Rihanna had been scheduled to perform before a sold-out crowd of 6,000 in the capital, Jakarta. But she changed her mind while in Australia, one of several countries that issued a travel advisory to citizens in Indonesia after the weekend executions of three Islamic militants convicted in the 2002 Bali bombings. The men called on followers to carry out revenge attacks if their deaths by firing squad went ahead. Purnomo, of Show Master Live, said she hoped the "Umbrella" singer would come to Jakarta in January.

Roman Catholic Bishop Would Accept No Compromise On Abortion Policy

The nation's Roman Catholic bishops vowed Tuesday to forcefully confront the Obama administration over its support for abortion rights, saying the church and religious freedom could be under attack in the new presidential administration. In an impassioned discussion on Catholics in public life, several bishops said they would accept no compromise on abortion policy. Many condemned Catholics who had argued it was morally acceptable to back President-elect Obama because he pledged to reduce abortion rates. And several prelates promised to call out Catholic policy makers on their failures to follow church teaching. Bishop Joseph Martino of Scranton, Pa., said he planned to counter Vice President-elect Biden, a Catholic, Scranton native who supports abortion rights. Chicago Cardinal Francis George, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, is preparing a statement during the bishops' fall meeting that will press Obama on abortion.

Along with their theological opposition to the procedure, church leaders say they worry that any expansion in abortion rights could require Catholic hospitals to perform abortions or face legal sanctions. Auxiliary Bishop Thomas Paprocki of Chicago said the hospitals would close rather than comply. During the campaign, many prelates had spoken out on abortion more boldly than they had in 2004, telling Catholic politicians and voters that the issue should be the most important consideration in setting policy and deciding which candidate to back. Yet, according to exit polls, 54 percent of Catholics chose Obama, who is Protestant. The new bishops' statement is meant to drive home the point in a way that cannot be misconstrued.

Circuit City Filed Under Chapter 11 Of The Bankruptcy Code

Circuit City Stores Inc., the nation's second-biggest electronics retailer, filed for bankruptcy protection on Monday but plans to stay open for business as the busy holiday shopping season approaches. It filed under Chapter 11 of the bankruptcy code, which will allow it to hold off creditors and continue operations while it develops a reorganization plan. The Richmond, VA based company has been struggling as nervous consumers spend less and credit has become tighter, and the retail industry overall is facing what's expected to be the weakest holiday season in decades.

Circuit City also said it would cut 700 more jobs, after announcing a week ago that it would close 20 percent of its stores and lay off thousands of workers. Circuit City, which has had only one profitable quarter in the past year, has faced significant declines in traffic and heightened competition from rival Best Buy Co. and others. It said it decided to file for bankruptcy protection because it was facing pressure from vendors who threatened to withhold products during the holiday season.

A Cute Pup In The White House

Among the offices Barack Obama has yet to fill, one has a special importance to his family: first dog. At his first postelection news conference on Friday, the president-elect called choosing a dog a "major issue" in the Obama household and a hot topic on his Web site. Add to that the strain of the inevitable attention that comes to a cute pup in the White House. On Thursday, President Bush's normally docile Scottish terrier Barney bit a Reuters reporter on the right index finger.

But Barack Obama has additional burden, although most presidents have brought a First Dog with them, his family has yet to fill that position. (AP Photo/Humane Society of Vero Beach, Janet Winikoff)

Angry Protesters About California's Ban On Gay Marriage

Thousands of protesters are angry about California's ban on gay marriage and so are the stars. Many celebrities grieved the passing of Proposition 8 in California this week. Some such as Wanda Sykes, Rose McGowen and Lance Bass attended a Wednesday protest criticizing the state's gay marriage ban. Others like Ellen DeGeneres, Rosie O'Donnell, Samantha Ronson and Melissa Etheridge vented their frustrations online, on TV, and onstage. Blocks away from the Thursday rally of more than 2,000 gay rights advocates outside the gates of a Mormon temple, several stars including James Cromwell, Patricia Clarkson, Anjelica Huston and Sean Penn. They supported the protesters while walking the red carpet at the BAFTA L.A. Brittania Awards at Hyatt Regency Century Plaza Hotel.

Other celebs used time in the spotlight to decry the decision. Madonna took a moment during her concert at Dodger Stadium to declare to the audience that she was sad "because African-Americans are equal finally, but gay marriage is not." Former teen queen Christina Aguilera also spoke out against the ban.

Sounds Of The Christmas Season

It's hard to believe that Christmas is just around the corner! Christmas is an annual holiday celebrated on December 25 that marks and honors the birth of Jesus of Nazareth. The Nativity of Jesus refers to the Christian belief that Messiah was born to the Virgin Mary. Modern customs of the holiday include gift-giving, church celebrations, and the display of various decorations including the Christmas tree, lights, mistletoe, nativity scenes and holly. Santa Claus, also referred to as Father Christmas, is a popular mythological figure often associated with bringing gifts at Christmas. Santa is generally believed to be the result of a syncretization between St. Nicholas of Myra and elements from pagan Nordic and Christian mythology, and his modern appearance is believed to have originated in 19th century media.

Christmas is celebrated throughout the Christian population worldwide, but is also celebrated by many non-Christians as a secular, cultural festival. A religious and a Joyous time when family and friends gather and good children receive gifts delivered by Santa Claus and placed under their Christmas Tree on Christmas eve!

Barack Obama swept to victory as the nation's first black president Tuesday night in an electoral college landslide that overcame racial barriers as old as America itself. "Change has come," he told a jubilant hometown Chicago crowd.

After eight years of Republican rule, Barack Obama turned Wednesday to the task of building a Democratic administration to lead the country out of war and into the financial recovery that he promised. Obama planned to spend the rest of the week at home in Chicago, turning in earnest to reviewing the hiring decisions he'll have to make in the next two-and-a-half months. Campaign advisers have already presented him with names to review for key positions, but they said he wasn't focused on filling the jobs before winning the election. A top priority, the advisers said, would be picking a White House chief of staff to help manage the selections to come. Illinois Rep. Rahm Emanuel appeared headed for the job, said Democrats who spoke on condition of anonymity before the announcement, expected as early as Wednesday. Obama also faces intensive national security briefings that will prepare him to take over as commander in chief.
